Two weeks ago I got a phone call that The New York Times would be covering Long Beach State’s run to the NCAA Basketball Tournament – and that we were granted all access behind the scenes with the team. I got to spend an intense day with the team on Friday, after working about 18 hours that day I was exhausted, but loved every moment of it. Here are a few of the many pictures I got to make. To read the full story, see The Times’ website.

I wasn’t in Detroit for Game 5 of the ALCS, but none the less, the mood in Dallas was… depressed. Went out to Victory Plaza which would have been filled with fans if they were winning, but less than a handful showed up.

Woke up this morning to learn that my good friend and photojournalist Alex Giddings was in town with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps here in Houston. Boom. Feature idea for the day. Turns out Jeff Lautenberger shot this in Tulsa yesterday and did a great job of it, so a high bar to meet, too.

In order to present a flawless performance, every movement of the group must be perfectly timed and executed. The Cadets tour across the nation from mid-May to mid-August, the corps performs across 40 different cities, practicing for at least eight hours a day prior to their evening performance competitions against other teams. The Cadets are currently ranked 2nd in the nation. (Patrick T. Fallon / Houston Chronicle )

Found this program today while looking for daily features. This community team gives kids a chance to have somewhere safe to play and learn about teamwork from 4-7pm, its free for the kids and offers them a head start towards being better athletes in high school and college. Thinking about perhaps following the team through their season as a project.
