Nancy Weaver, 60, a Bachmann supporter, poses for a portrait at the Candyland Station Soda Fountain on Thursday, December 29, 2011 in Grinnell, Iowa. She favors Representative Michelle Bachmann because the congresswoman raised 23 foster children. "That's a huge endeavor for any man or woman." Patrick T. Fallon/For The New York Times

Met an interesting couple today while working on a story for La Voz, the Spanish language publication from the Chronicle. Got to love how people innovate and come up with new ideas in the face of adversity like a layoff. They were just demonstrating what they did while I was there – but by the end of the day they had the full video online.

Marcelo and Debbie Marin demonstrate their home video studio that they use to record their YouTube educational children's videos of "Munequita LaLa," acted out by Debbie at their home on Monday, June 13, 2011 in Sugar Land. After Marcelo was laid off from his job at Telemundo, he became a freelance videographer, working for various broadcast television stations and producing videos of weddings, Quinceaneras and corporate videos. As the video market has chaged, so has Marcelo's business, with more production of internet content and a focus on social media using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for clients. Marcelo had the idea to develop a spanish-language internet video series for preschool and kindgergarden children and with the help of his family, they are able to produce the series at home. Debbie was a kindergarden teacher in Argentina and has worked with kids for decades, including some of the songs and lessons she performs online. Some of their videos can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/MunequitaLala (Photo © 2011 Patrick T. Fallon / Houston Chronicle )

My first day shooting for the Chronicle featured two portrait shoots, here is one that has been published so far. One of my goals for the summer is improve my portraiture, to shoot better portraits using both natural and artificial light that are characteristic of the subject and appropriate for the story.

Patrick Merrill, 18, practices with his band at Helie's Carpet in Claremont, N.H., Wednesday evening June 2, 2010. Merrill joined the Ombudsman program last fall as an independent alternative to learning traditionally at Stevens High School and now finds himself playing to his own tune, learning more and earning better grades. For my rock and roll portrait, I used a blue Honl Photo speedlight gel on my Canon 550EX Flash from the rear on ETTL Slave. I mounted the flash on a plate attached to a ‘magic’ variable friction arm, connected to a superclamp on a forklift! This basic box of tools I always keep in the car just in case I have an idea…
In front, a Canon 580EX II flash on camera, set in master ETTL mode. Getting the two flashes to talk was a real chore, but a lack of PocketWizards mean this was one of my few options with what I had. Continue reading »
Friday morning, my main assignment was for a lifestyles feature about Bill Halleck who after 88 years is still running strong, literally.

Another busy day here in Vancouver. Work up at 7am to try and shoot curling – alas the venue was pretty full so no room to shoot from the stands or tables with a 400mm – so fruitless, I headed back to the Main Press Center in time for the 11am press conference with Canadian Cross Country Skier Brian McKeever.

After getting back to the MPC from shooting the Finland – Russia women’s Ice Hockey game last night, my editor gave me a last minute assignment – a portrait session with the first team USA gold medalist, Hannah Kearney. I left the MPC and made my way up 6 blocks to the Team USA House on Seymour.

About a year ago, my father got a phone call from some family friends, their photographer had bailed on them the day before they were supposed to re-shoot their wedding portraits [they had rain on their wedding day].
