Over the last few weeks here at Mizzou, judging has taken place for the Pictures of the Year International Contest, POYi. While the POYi winners names have been released, the ins-and-outs are over, the real beauty of being in Missouri during POYi is the ability to sit in for the judging. As always, I was not able to attend as much as I would have liked, but I was able to sit in for a few mornings and afternoons… Continue reading »

On Dec. 30th, I shipped my first and last rolls of Kodachrome to Dwaynes Photo in Kansas. Here are a few pictures of the result. I am still scanning more, but I am glad that I got to at least shoot a few rolls from a different era in photography. All of these are full frame, uncropped scans, basically untouched.

I’m convinced that every sentence of the Tao of Photography is a photography gem… reading it makes your eyes open wide.

Inspiration. Not something it always easily found. Going into my last semester at the University of Missouri, I am excited about my last photo class, picture story, as I am surrounded by many talented photographers with interesting ideas and perspectives. They are a source of inspiration for me, as are many of my friends and colleagues, such as Ryan Henriksen, seen below…

My first – and last – two rolls of kodachrome went to FedEx last night, shot the film on my dad’s Nikon FE2.
I have not shot much with the film, but I had the pleasure of spending many weeks scanning my father’s archive of images. It was incredible to see how the film stood the test of time with such great color depth. Makes our jobs look easy now.
I’m excited to see what comes back.

Recently returned from the Eddie Adams Workshop. An incredible experience, I had the opportunity to get to know some of the best in the business, making some new friends and seeing some old ones. For my story assignment, my original lead fell through at the last moment, so I had to get creative and find something else to shoot in the 3 hours I had…

A good first day during the first day of NPPA Convergence Seminar. Spent most of my time working with the board meetings about ideas and resolutions, including those to get more participation from students and members with Education, as well as how the NPPA is working to advocate for the rights of the photojournalism community. Also went out Thursday night to make some pictures for the Canon Shoot Out, here are my entrants.

I once heard from a photographer to never forget to take pictures of the people you love, your family, your friends, those around you have made you who you are and have impacted your life. My brother Daniel is certainly one of those people. Seeing him enter into the Naval Academy today was a powerful experience. I consider an assignment of life.

Fallon and Anderson both graduated from Redondo Union High School last week and will spend the next seven weeks in Plebe Summer, a rigorous summer mental and physical training program designed to turn civilians into midshipmen. Unpaid Internships Help No One.**
A major NHL Hockey team sent an email today to my school requesting unpaid photo interns. I was appalled, though sadly not suprised.
This may eventually become part of a larger article I am working on as student board representative for the NPPA. If you have taken an unpaid internship at some point, I would like to hear about your experience. In the next few weeks I also hope to talk with some representatives from the US Department of Labor, to learn more about how they are cracking down on the often illegal scheme being used to replace paid employees during the harsh economic times.

This is a terrific piece by LA Times photojournalist Rick Loomis, been around for a little while now, but I just watched it again and felt I should share.
Watch the Video at PBS
So instead of going crazy in Panama City or Cancun for Spring Break, I decided to go to the Southern Short Course in News Photography.
Off to North Carolina it was.

[Thanks for the tour of Kansas City Rob!]
