Its been a while, but here is another beauty asking for free images – the twist? The publication is actually the competition (though a small one) to the newspaper that originally paid me for the work.

Patrick,
Hi, my name is Nick McCabe. I’m working with Kansas City Sports and Fitness Magazine on a player of the month feature sponsored by the Army. Bricker Dixon is a winner for this month. I see the great photos you’ve taken on your site. We’re having a devil of a time finding a good photo of Bricker, so I’m wondering if we could use the photo of Bricker’s state title win you have up on your site? This is what the feature looks like (find it on page 13): (redacted)
As you can see, the photos are quite small so I’m not positive there’s room to credit you like we normally would (I’m administrating the award, I know nothing about layout). I would think, though, we could include a credit somewhere. If it’s ok to use, how should we credit you?
I suspect we’ll be able to pull right off the site but again, will let you know if otherwise.
Thanks so much for your consideration!
Nick McCabe

Enjoying some of my time this labor day, I took a peek at the National Press Photographer’s Association membership. Not wanting to sound like I am pimping these perks just because I am the Student Representative to the Board – I’ve been a member for four years and never took advantage of these before today.

Click For List of NPPA Member Discounts
For a full list of special offers right now, sign in here with your NPPA Membership.
Discounts I’ve been able to take advantage of, or soon will be:
- $19 on a new Apple iPod Touch, usually I just use my student discount at the school bookstore for Apple gear, but iPods do not have a student discount anymore. The NPPA’s Apple Store link does, however.
- 10% off my T-Mobile cell phone bill (about $11/month for the family.)
- Hertz Rental Cars – a CDP discount code, but more importantly for student members, calling Hertz and with the right representative, Hertz will waive the under 25 rental surcharge sometimes for those on work business, though you still need to be over 21. This can save hundreds – and make renting a car economically feasible.
- Discounts on insurance and software like PhotoMechanic.
Enjoy!
A good first day during the first day of NPPA Convergence Seminar. Spent most of my time working with the board meetings about ideas and resolutions, including those to get more participation from students and members with Education, as well as how the NPPA is working to advocate for the rights of the photojournalism community. Also went out Thursday night to make some pictures for the Canon Shoot Out, here are my entrants.

Unpaid Internships Help No One.**
A major NHL Hockey team sent an email today to my school requesting unpaid photo interns. I was appalled, though sadly not suprised.
This may eventually become part of a larger article I am working on as student board representative for the NPPA. If you have taken an unpaid internship at some point, I would like to hear about your experience. In the next few weeks I also hope to talk with some representatives from the US Department of Labor, to learn more about how they are cracking down on the often illegal scheme being used to replace paid employees during the harsh economic times.

An excerpt from my Business Marketing 3000 Class, taught by Dr. Joel Poor, applies directly to how photography is offered in the current market.
“…firms are limited in what price they can set because of the availability of similar competitive offerings. Few people will pay ten cents more per gallon for gasoline at one station if there is a cheaper alternative across the street…
